West Palm Beach

West Palm Beach is a large coastal city and the county seat of Palm Beach County, Florida. It has approximately 50 neighborhoods and is the 20th largest community in the state by population. It is located about 68 miles north of downtown Miami and is the oldest municipality in the South Florida Metropolitan Area. It has a mayor/commissioner form of city government and a wonderful tropical rainforest climate. It is known for its beaches, boutiques, art museums, and waterfront areas. It is also the spring training home of both the Miami Marlins and the St. Louis Cardinals. It is a well-educated community, over 31% of adult residents hold 4-year degrees or higher. It is ethnically diverse, and over 26% of residents are foreign born. English is the most common language among residents, followed by Spanish and French Creole.

The area that would one day be West Palm Beach was settled in 1884, incorporated as a town in the fall of 1894 and incorporated as a city in the summer of 1903. The city was named the county seat in 1909. Today it is a thriving city full of big city hustle and quaint southern charm. The city has several historic neighborhoods and districts, such as Central Park, El Cid, Flamingo Park, Grandview Heights, Mango Promenade, Old Northwood Historic District and many others. It has been home to notable residents such as actor Tommy Lee Jones, author James Patterson, pro basketball player Magic Johnson, actress Glen Close, radio personality Howard Stern and many others.

The city spans 58.2 square miles, 55.1 square miles of land and 3.1 square miles of water area. In 2000, the median household income was $36,774, the median family income was $42,074 and the per capita income was $23,188. In 2010, the per capita income had risen to $29,882 and the population had risen to 99,919. By 2013, the estimated median household income was $43,070, the mean housing price on all housing units was $254,740 and the median gross rent was $1,071. And in 2014, the population was 104,031 and the population density was 1,833.8 people per square mile. These statistics show steady growth in both the local economy and the population. It is an upper-middle income city and has a decidedly white-collar workforce, where over 85% of the workforce hold white-collar positions.

Public education is provided by the Palm Beach County School District, which has many schools and is the 11th largest school district in the United States. Local schools, public, private and charter include, but are not limited to Palm Beach Maritime Academy, Dreyfoos School of the Arts, U.B. Kinsey/Palmview Elementary School, Cardinal Newman High School, Royal Palm Beach High School and many others. Local attractions include the Palm Beach Zoo and Dreher Park, Lion Country Safari, the South Florida Science Museum, Rapids Water Park and more. The city offers many unique sports venues like polo fields, a velodrome, BMX Racing and croquet. Major employers  include CSC, Cemex, General Dynamics, Sikorsky Aircraft and more.
