Delray Beach

Delray Beach is a medium-sized coastal city located in Palm Beach Couty, Florida. The city has approximately 35 neighborhoods and is the 41st largest community in the state. It is an ethnically diverse community where  23% of residents were foreign born. English is the most common language, followed by Spanish and French Creole. It is an educated community, nearly 34% of adults hold four-year degrees or higher.  It has a commissioner/manager style of city government and a lush tropical rainforest climate with hot, humid summers and warm winters. It is a thriving part of the Miami Metropolitan Area and shares borders with Bocca Raton, Highland Beach, Boynton Beach and more. The city has three miles of beachfront along the Atlantic Ocean and Downtown Delray Beach is accessible by boat via the Intracoastal Waterway.

The town history began with the construction of the Orange Grove House of Refuge in 1876. The Linton settlement was established in 1884 and by 1894 they established a school. Also, in 1894, the Florida East Coast Railroad came through the area and brought with it the establishment of a railroad station/stop in the Linton settlement. The Delray settlement was established in 1901. Early crops throughout the area included a variety of winter vegetables. In 1911, plants for canning tomatoes and pineapples were opened and pineapple quickly became the primary crop. The settlements merged to become a single incorporated town called Delray in October of 1911. It was reincorporated as the town of Delray Beach in October of 1923 and finally incorporated as the city of Delray Beach in May of 1927. In the 1960s, it gained fame as a prime surfing spot.

The city spans 15.89 square miles 15.37 square miles of land area and the rest water area. In 2013, the estimated median household income was $48,535, the estimated per capita income was $34,870. Also, the estimated median house or condo value in the community was $173,478 the mean price on all housing units was $251,596 and the median gross rent was $1,243. In 2010, the population was 60,522. By 2014 the population was 65,055 and the population density was 4,100 people per square mile.  In 2014, the top five employers in the city were Delray Medical Center, Palm Beach County School District, Lifespace Communities, the City of Delray Beach and Publix Supermarkets. It is a predominantly white-collar community. Over 87% of the workforce works in white-collar positions.

Public education is provided by the Palm Beach County School District. Local schools include Atlantic High School, Carver Middle School, Morikami Park Elementar and more. Public transportation options include commuter trains, buses, shuttles and more, but the most popular option is the bus. Local attractions include Delray Beach, the Downtown Arts District, Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens, and others.
