Palm Beach is coastal town located in Palm Beach County, Florida. It has approximately four neighborhoods and is the 217th largest community in the state. The city is nautical in nature and features breathtaking ocean views, beautiful beaches and a rich nautical history. Much of the local economy is based in the tourism trade and population swells during tourist season. It is the easternmost community in the state of Florida and is located on a barrier island, which is separated from the mainland by the Intracoastal Waterway. It has a lush tropical rainforest climate. In June of 2008, Palm Beach was chosen as “America’s Best Place To Live” according to Robb Report Magazine. It is a wealthy community and over 61% of adult residents hold four-year degrees or better. It is fairly ethnically diverse and over 17% of residents were born outside the United States. English is the most common language, followed by French and Spanish.
The town had its start in a resort established by Henry Flagler. Flagler also made the area accessible through the construction of the Florida East Coast Railway. Flagler then constructed two luxurious hotels to attract visitors, the Breakers and the Royal Poinciana. Many notable people have called Palm Beach home, including James H. Clark the founder of Netscape, columnist and author Ann Coulter, Spencer Antle a fashion designer and filmmaker, singer Jimmy Buffett and the founder of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Nancy Blinker. Other notable residents included Michael Jackson, Ivana Trump, Rod Stewart, Howard Stern and others.
The town spans 10.4 square miles, 3.9 square miles of land area and 6.5 square miles of water. It is a predominantly white-collar community with nearly 95% of the workforce holding white-collar positions. Over 25% of the workforce works from their own homes via telecommuting and home based businesses. In 2000, the population was 10,468 and the population density was 1,006.5 people per square mile. The per capita income in the same year was $109,219. By 2011, the per capita income was $129,941. In 2013, the estimated median household income was $105,505, the estimated per capita income was $124,895. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value was $717,299, mean price on all housing units was $290,345 and the median gross rent was $1,192.
Public education in Palm Beach is provided by the Palm Beach County School District and the only public school in the community is Palm Beach Public School, which teaches students in PK-5th grade. There is a local private school, Palm Beach Day Academy. Public transportation is provided, in part, by Palm Transit. Public transportation options include Tri-Rail, bus, Amtrak and the Palm Beach International Airport. Points of interest in the town includes, Four Arts Garden, a botanical garden; Mar-a-Lago, a local landmark and estate built by Marjorie Merriweather Post in 1924-1927; the Flagler Museum in a mansion known as Whitehall which appears on the National Register of Historic Places.
