Miami, Florida is a huge coastal city in southeastern Florida, which is the county seat of Miami-Dade County. It has more than 250 neighborhoods and countless sub-neighborhoods and is the second largest community in the state by population. It is also the fourth largest urban area in the United States. It is the principal and central city of the Miami Metropolitan Area and has several nicknames including "Magic City" and "The Gateway to the Americas." It is a very ethnically diverse city, where more than half of the residents are foreign-born. The most common language spoken in Miami is Spanish, followed by English and French Creole. The city has a tropical monsoon climate, which brings hot humid summers and warm winters.

 

The city has a mixed workforce of white and blue collar workers and a mayor/commission form of city government. The city spans 55.27 square miles, 35.68 square miles of land and 19.59 square miles of water. In 2010, the population was 399,457 and the population density was 11,135.9 people per square mile. The estimated population for 2014 is 430,332. In 2010, the median household income for the city was $29,621, the median family income was $33,379 and the per capita income was $19,745. By 2013,  the estimated median household income was $31,070 and the estimated per capita income was $22,692. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value in the city was $223,500, the mean housing price on all units was $290,150 and the median gross rent was $947. Miami is not only a center of commerce and international business community is also a major vacation destination. This gives the city a very diverse economic base that makes it particularly stable economically speaking.

 

The area that became the city of Miami has been inhabited for thousands of years, first by indigenous tribes, then by European explorers and settlers. It was settled in 1825 and incorporated in July of 1896.  Today it is cultural melting pot and thriving financial hub. Education in the city is provided by the Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The district is the largest in the state and the fourth largest in the country. Public transportation comes from a variety of sources like the Metromover rail service, the Tri-Rail System, Metrobus service and much more.
