Bay Harbor

When most people think of South Florida, the city of Miami immediately comes to mind. However, just a 20-minute drive from Miami International Airport lies the charming town of Bay Harbor Islands or ‘BHI’ as known by locals. This vibrant community is comprised of two islands: Broadview to the west and Bay Harbor to the east. Both islands have plenty to offer both visitors and residents alike. Broadview is primarily residential area made up exclusively of single family homes. Any time of the year you’ll find homes for sale or seasonal rentals, making the Bay Harbor Island real estate market quite lucrative. The second island, Bay Harbor, is home to the town’s commercial district where one can enjoy everything from fine dining and shopping to art galleries and a palm tree-lined main concourse. The town’s recreational opportunities (in the form of parks and tennis courts) and proximity to Downtown Miami and South Beach make it a great place to both live and work.

BHI was founded in 1947, leaving it with plenty of examples of unique mid-century Miami modern architecture, including many historic buildings designed by world-renowned architects such as Morris Lapidus and Henry Hohauser. These buildings are primarily found on the east island and are a major point of interest for both tourists and residents. Efforts are currently being made by residents and the National Trust for Historic Preservation to ensure the preservation of these historic architectural gems.

The town’s population is roughly 6,007 and quite diverse. Residents can be heard speaking multiple languages, from English and Spanish to Portuguese and even Hebrew or French, only adding to the vibrancy of this island residence. It also boasts sizable Colombian, Cuban, Peruvian, Turkish and Venezuelan communities, as seen in the form of local business and restaurants. Families make up roughly 20 percent of the town’s population (which are served by a K-8 school on the island itself).

Whether you’re a tourist who simply wants to experience a charming ‘small town feel’  while enjoying fine dining and excellent shopping without going far from Downtown Miami or a potential homeowner, the town of Bay Harbor Islands has plenty to offer. The town’s business directory has a complete listing of all realtors/real estate agencies that serve the area and can assist you in finding your new residence, whether you’re in search of a roomy single family home on the west island or a condo or apartment on the east island.
