Aventura is a planned suburban community that has grown into a city located in northeastern Miami-Dade County. It has approximately ten neighborhoods and is the 80th largest community in the state by population. It is a wealthy community in comparison to state and federal economic statistics. It is home to the Aventura Mall, which is the fifth largest shopping mall in the United States. It has a council/manager form of city government and a tropical monsoon climate with hot, humid summers and warm drier winters. It is a major vacation destination and much of the local economy is based on the tourism industry. It is a somewhat ethnically-diverse city and over 50% of adult residents have four-year degrees or higher. Over 46% of residents were born outside the United States, English is the most common language in the city, followed by Spanish, Hebrew, Portuguese, and Russian.
The community was originally known as Turnberry, but the name was later changed. Development of the community that would grow into the city of Aventura began in the early 1970s. Growth was fast and it was incorporated as the city of Aventura in November of 1995. Aventura means adventure in Spanish and it speaks to the nature of the city and its people. The city has had a number of notable residents such as Senator Howard Metzenbaum and soccer play Fred Nudel of the United States Boy’s National Team.
The city spans 3.5 square miles, 2.7 square miles of land area and the rest water. In 2010, the population was 35,762, population density was 13,487 people per square mile and the per capita income was $46,131. In 2013, the estimated median household income was $58,502 and the estimated per capita income was $47,159. In the same year, the median house or condo value was $275,342, the mean price on all housing units was $282,366 and the median gross rent was $1,522. In 2014, the population was estimated at a whopping 37,451. It is a predominantly white-collar city with nearly 95% of the workforce holding/working white-collar positions and professions. Over 11% of the workforce work from home via telecommuting and small home-based business.
Public education is provided by the schools of the Dade County School District. There is only one public school in Aventura, Aventura City of Excellence School, which teaches Kindergarten through eighth grade. Public transportation options include shuttle bus service through Aventura Express, regular buses from Broward County Transit, as well as Tri-rail service and Metro Rail Service. Local attractions include Aventura Mall, a 2,400,000 square feet indoor shopping mall, the Turnberry Golf Course and the Aventura Country Club Drive Circle which features a three-mile horticultural walking/jogging path. The city also has a wonderful park system that provides amenities like playgrounds, open spaces, benches and sports courts and fields.
