In 1960, A developer living in southern Florida named Norman Johnson walked into a Miami car dealership. There he saw an upside down car, which led him to a unique idea for an attraction to his newest development, a small town called Sunrise Golf Course Village. He’d purchased the 2,650 acres near Fort Lauderdale, where he then built an upside down house complete with an upside down car in the driveway. The structure brought national attention to Sunrise, and visitors found themselves purchasing homes and moving to the tiny village.

Today, Sunrise has a burgeoning population of more than 90,000 and continues to grow. Sunrise real estate holds a median home value of approximately $167,000, comprised of multicultural families, a high Haitian population, and retirement locations for over 14% of its residents. The growth is attributed to numerous attractions in Sunrise, including Sawgrass International Corporate Park, which houses Sawgrass Mills. The massive attraction for shopping and entertainment includes 350 stores, plus restaurants, family entertainment, and a movie theater. The amalgamation of parks includes sports facilities, playgrounds, splash pads, and a golf course. There are also many picnic pavilions and paths for walking and biking.

Sunrise is also the location of the BB&T Center, the home of the National Hockey League’s Florida Panthers. The venue hosts home games, as well as musicians, various entertainers, and local events.

The combination of the BB&T Center, Sawgrass Mills, and the upside down house has made the city of Sunrise a top tourist attraction for the state of Florida. The location and ease of access via interstate and expressway have created an enticing prospective home for many of Sunrise’s visitors.
