Southwest Ranches is a small, but affluent town in Broward County, Florida, which sits on the edge of the Everglades. It has approximately two neighborhoods and is the 229th largest community in the state by population. It is located 15 miles southwest of Fort Lauderdale and has a council/manager style of town government. Over 38% of adult residents hold four-year degrees or more. It is an ethnically diverse community, where over 27% of residents are foreign born. English is the primary language, followed by Spanish and French. The town maintains a semi-rural lifestyle and the town is zoned almost entirely as rural residential and agricultural. The officially town motto is “Preserving our Rural Lifestyle” and the unofficial motto is “The Pavement Stops Here.” Common sights in the community are grazing animals, local wildlife, open spaces, nurseries, farms, preserved lands recreation and the enjoyment of residents. There is very light development in industry and commercial spaces within the community.

The community was formed to ward off encroaching development from the city of Pembroke Pines. The town’s name was chosen through a local contest and comes from the location of the community in southwestern Broward County and the abundance of horse ranches in the area. The town has been home to many notable residents like NFL players Vernon Carey, Daunte Culpepper, Reggie Wayne and others, as well as actor River Alexander and pro wrestler and actor Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson.

The town spans 26.3 square miles, 12.8  square miles of all land area. It is a predominantly white-collar community and 88% of the workforce hold/work white-collar positions and professions. Over 8% of the workforce works from home via home-based business and telecommuting. It is a wealthy community when compared to state and national economic statistics. In 2010, the per capita income was $44,693. By 2013, the estimated median household income was $50,466 and the estimated per capita income was $27,804. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value was $181,000, the mean housing price on all units was $234,961 and the median gross rent was $1,680. The population in 2014 was estimated as 7,761 and the population density at 610 residents per square mile. Today, it remains a peaceful yet thriving community that continues to value its country charm and open spaces.

It is part of the Broward County School District, whose top-rated schools provide a wonderful education for the children. Schools located in Southwest Ranches include Franklin Academy E and Franklin Academy F. The average commute time for residents of Southwest Ranch is approximately 32 minutes and as it is a small town there is no public transportation. Neighborhoods and sub-neighborhoods include, but are not limited to Green Meadow, Rolling Oaks, Landmark Ranch Estates, Sterling Ranch Estates and others. The town features 25  miles of multi-use trails for hiking and trail riding, 150 acres of land for public use from undeveloped open spaces to developed park lands and facilities.
